NTPUD - Recreation and Parks

In 1968 the NTPUD Board of Directors created the Parks Department to oversee the development of the former sewer ponds into the North Tahoe Regional Park.

The Recreation and Parks Department maintains our facilities with a small staff of four full-time, year round employees and as well as a full summer seasonal staff.

In 2006-2007 a Recreation and Parks Master Plan was created to help guide the priorities and projects for the Parks and Facilities Department over the coming years.  You can view the Master Plan by clicking here.

The Recreation and Parks Commission is an advisory commission to the NTPUD Board of Directors on matters of Recreation and Parks. The Commission is a liaison between the NTPUD Board and the community and consists of five (5) adult members and two (2) student members. The Commission also administers the Youth Trust Fund which provides scholarship opportunities for recreation activities for children and teens that reside in the District.

CURRENT PROJECTS

North Tahoe Regional Bike Trail - This project would pick up where the Tahoe City Public Utility District trail system ends in Dollar Hill and connect that trail with the North Tahoe Regional Park in Tahoe Vista. The District received a grant from the California Tahoe Conservancy, for planning and Environmental Review required for this project.  For more information on this project, visit the project website by clicking here.  On this website you can find out more about the project and sign up to be notified directly about public meetings related to the project.

North Tahoe Regional Park

The map of the North Tahoe Regional Park has recently been updated.  Click here to view a copy of the map.

The North Tahoe Regional Park is located one mile west of Highway 267 and one mile north of Highway 28 in Tahoe Vista. The Regional Park encompasses 124 acres of predominantly active recreational activities. Surrounding the Regional Park on three sides are accessible public lands offering users a more passive recreational experience.Found within the Regional Park are five night-lighted tennis courts, several athletic fields, basketball, handball and sand volleyball courts. Hiking trails wind throughout the Regional Park and include and 18 station fitness par course and a self-guided nature trail and a paved bike path for access to National Forest land or Highway 267. All of these trails meander through pine and fir forests with trailheads situated on the Regional Park’s main road. Also adjacent are a number of picnic sites tucked away under the canopy of mature conifers. For larger gatherings, the covered picnic Ramada seats 100 and provides excellent views of the lake.Conveniently located next to the Ramada is a children’s playground.

There is a parking fee of $3.00 for non-NTPUD residents.  NTPUD Residents pay an annual assessment on their property taxes which supports the maintenance and operation of the Park.

Beaches

The Parks Department maintains and manages local beaches that are either owned by the District or other state agencies. These local, public beaches include Kings Beach State Recreation Area, Tahoe Vista Recreation Area and Boat Launch, Carnelian Beach, Patton Beach, Sandy Beach, Secline Beach, Moon Dunes Beach, North Tahoe Beach, Coon Street Boat Launch and Speedboat Beach.

Due to water quality issues dogs are not permitted on the beaches.  The only dog beach located within the North Tahoe PUD is to the left of the Coon Street Boat Ramp as you are looking at the Lake.

While there are no charges to use any of the beaches that are owned or managed by the District, parking fees do apply at the Kings Beach State Recreation Area and Tahoe Vista Recreation Area.

Beach Parking and Launch/Ramp Fees

It is only through revenue collected in the form of parking fees and concessionaires that the District is able to take care of annual maintenance, restrooms, litter and trash removal, other maintenance as needed (e.g. graffiti removal and repair of vandalism) and captial improvement projects at Tahoe Vista Recreation Area and Kings Beach State Recreation Area.  To view current parking and launch fees, please click here.

Remember, there is no charge for use of the beach, only for parking, so if you bike, walk, or use public transportation use of the beach is free.
